Hawks View Cellars Annual La Baleine Blending Event

August 14, 2010

Hawks View Cellars welcomed their La Baleine members to the winery for the annual La Baleine Blending event last Sunday. The attendees were greeted with wines of their choice and enjoyed a warm day of sun, a Carlton Farms suckling pig roast (provided by the Duyn family), and superb cuisine catered by Portland's Ten 01.

The highlight of the afternoon was a private blending seminar with winemaker Ryan Harms. Each table worked cooperatively to blend their own version of the 2009 La Baleine, including label design and winery name. Upon review by industry veteran Ted Farthing and Ryan, the winning table was awarded five magnums of the 2008 Hawks View Vineyard Pinot Noir to reward their blending prowess.

Upon completion of the activity, the La Baleine's returned to the tasting room for the reveal of the much anticipated 2009 La Baleine bottling. Produced only for this level of membership, attendees secured their annual case of this limited and sought after offering.

The La Baleine level of membership is reserved for our most loyal supporters. Hawks View Cellars hosts a number of complimentary and private events each year to thank them for their patronage. Up next, an educational evening in November with Riedel Glass, highlighting the important of proper glass while experiencing wine.

Hawks View Hosts Iconic Winemaker Roberto Conterno

March 10, 2010

Hawks View Cellars had the honor of hosting some of the best winemakers in Italy for a tour and lunch recently. Roberto Conterno , Erika Zanlorenzi with Azienda Vitivinicola "Conterno Giacomo" and Nicola Bianchi of Le Vigne di Ca' Nova were accompanied by Stephanie Sprinkle of E & R Wine Shop in Portland for a day in the Willamette Valley. They arrived at 9:30 am and toured our new facility with General Manager, A.J. Kemp, taking special interest in the Euroselect destemmer that we had purchased in 2007, then headed to the vineyard to talk viticulture with our Vineyard Manager George Hillberry. Piedmont, like Oregon, trellises with Gyout as well, and everyone traded stories on yields and pruning techniques, finding the two regions very similar.

The group then headed back into the winery, where they tasted all of our current and soon to be released wines. Roberto was very impressed with Hawks Views white wines, stating that Riesling was one of his favorite varietals, and that ours was fantastic loved the 2008 Pinot Gris, feeling that the complexity was rare for the varietal. We then moved into the reds, where the group was really impressed. Roberto felt that the wines were very honest, something he doesn't say very often, particularly enjoying the 2008 Hawks View Cellars Pinot Noir. The group then sat for a three-course lunch, paired with Hawks View wines.

Finally, the group bid farewell and Roberto headed to McMinnville to meet with Eyrie winemaker Jason Lett, and then on to Salem to visit Evening Land Vineyards, where Dominique Lafon happened to be helping with the 2008 Pinot Noir Blends. All and all, it was an amazing visit with some very passionate wine minds!

Arrivederci, we will see you all in Alba!!
